Alternative Processes: juried exhibition
at PhotoPlace Gallery in Middlebury, Vermont, on view Nov. 10th through Dec. 8th.
Forty photographs were choosen from among over 250

publishing. In his personal work he implements many photographic techniques including toy cameras, pinhole, other film and
digital cameras as well as alternative processes, scanners, aged paper, wax, installation, collage, and hand drawing. His
work has been exhibited throughout the U.S. including special invitations by Sitka Center for Art & Ecology, PONCHO art
invitational, and the Oregon College of Art & Craft’s Annual ‘Art on the Vine Auction’. He is
the exhibitions coordinator of Plates to Pixels Gallery and editor of Diffusion magazine. Our congratulations
to the photographers whose work was selected.
Juror's
Statement:
First off, I'm delighted to have been invited
to jury this exhibit - it's great to see such dynamic exhibits taking place at PhotoPlace Gallery. The hardest part in jurying
an "alternative process" exhibition is defining what that really means. What is alternative process photography
anyway? In education it's pretty common to see alternative process referring to the antiquated photography processes, however
there seems to be some cross over with other analog media in contemporary photography trends. The more advanced digital photography
becomes, and adopted, we may see a shift to anything not printed digitally as an "alternative process". I fear we
may need to make some clear classifications for the tradition gelatin silver and film user and so on. But I digress...for
this show, I approached the definition very loosely, and really tried to showcase the diversity that was quite apparent in
the submissions. I not only wanted to show the strongest images from the portfolios submitted but I also took into account
how the exhibit would flow as a whole. For my final selections I was drawn to several element's, outside of the theme, which
were: mystery, wonder, and serenity. I hope, by combining these elements, balanced with a variety of processes, it will create
an enticing visual journey for the viewer.
