Juror: Kate Ware, Curator of Photographs, New Mexico Museum of Art
The most pressing issues facing
us today revolve around questions of our relationship to the planet we inhabit. While in the past the wilderness photographs
of Ansel Adams defined the natural environment as a place of untouched pristine beauty, much recent photographic work has
examined the increasing complexity of our interaction with the environment by focusing on such topics
as pollution, global warming, industrial development, resource depletion, sustainability, recycling, and land use. For the
PhotoPlace exhibition PHOTOGRAPHY AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERN, we sought photographs that explore
our relationship to the environment. We are thrilled to welcome Kate
Ware, Curator of Photography at the New Mexico Museum of Art, as juror for this
exhibition.
Kate
selected forty photos for exhibition at PhotoPlace Gallery from March 30th
through April 20th, 2013 in an exhibition timed to coincide with the Middlebury
College Museum of Art's exhibition Nature Transformed: Edward Burtynsky's Vermont Quarry Photographs in
Context. Kate also chose thirty-five additional photos for the gallery’s Online
Annex. All selected work will be included in a full-color exhibition catalog available for purchase. To help artists
defray costs, PhotoPlace Gallery offers to mat and frame work selected for exhibition free of charge, providing artists print
their images to our pre-cut mat and frame sizes.
