Jurors: Elizabeth Corden and Jan Potts Corden | Potts Gallery, San Francisco
Windows and mirrors offer photographers an amazig variety of creative options.
a window can offer a reflected subject or be used as a framing element in a composition. A mirror can present two
different realities simultaneously, or present an altered view of reality. We are honored that San Francisco gallerists
Elizabeth Corden and Jan Potts served as the jurors for this exhibition. Together they selected a remarkable collection
of photographs that explore the strange and wonderful ways that mirrors and windows help us see our world anew. They chose
forty photos for exhibition at PhotoPlace Gallery from October 30th through November 20th, 2012. They
also selected an additional thirty-five photos for the gallery’s “Online Annex.”
All of
these photographs will be included in a full-color exhibition catalog available for purchase. To help artists defray
costs, PhotoPlace Gallery offers to mat and frame work selected for exhibition free of charge, providing artists print their
images to our pre-cut mat and frame sizes or use our print service.
Jurors' Statement: One of our prime criteria
in reviewing the submissions to PhotoPlace Gallery’s Windows and Mirrors competition was a unique take on the theme.
After all, the fascination with reflections in windows and mirrors has beguiled
photographers since the early days of photography, so bringing a fresh view to the subject is a challenge. We also looked for images where the photographer
displayed a command of the technical aspects of the image and for variety among the images we selected. This
was not an easy task and we had to leave many worthy images out of the final mix for the gallery show and for the online exhibit.
